‘Tis The Season For Allergies, Grab The Tissues!

When most people think of seasonal allergies, they usually think of common elements or triggers such as trees, grass, pollen, dust and other pesty outdoor allergens. But, did you know that most allergy symptoms tend to increase during the holidays? Why, you ask? Believe it or not, the holidays can heighten your allergic sensitivities due to several common culprits from inside your home. To combat your sniffles around the dinner table this holiday season, the team at Air Oasis has compiled a list of the most common allergy triggers for this time of year.

  • Christmas trees: While Christmas trees are beautiful and give off a wonderful scent throughout your home, they have an irritating sap that can act as a potent allergen. Not to mention, Christmas trees tend to carry pollen and mold within their needles and bark.
Solution: We understand it can be hard to give up your live tree, but by selecting an alternative option you will be able to reduce the amount of mold and pollen throughout your home.
  • Ornaments and decorations: From October through December, our homes are constantly being swapped out with decorations, which tend to accumulate dust and mold while kept in storage. While we enjoy hanging up festive decorations to get us in the holiday spirit, we are putting ourselves at risk for dust mites and mold spores.
Solution: Store your decorations in sealed, moisture-resistant containers. When it comes time to take out your holiday décor, be sure to clean each item thoroughly with a vacuum.
  • Lighting the fireplace: Who doesn’t love the smell of a burning fireplace during the holidays? But, did you know wood fires, Yule logs and wood stoves can all be a source of irritation? Even burning candles can cause allergies to spike!
Solution: When using wood-burning devices, be sure they are in a well-vented area and that smoke does not accumulate within your home. If you simply can’t get rid of your candles, try replacing them with artificial ones!
  • Pet dander: During the holiday season our pets are likely to spend more time indoors because of the weather changes. Therefore, during these months the amount of pet dander throughout your home increases.
Solution: Limit your contact with pet allergens by vacuuming often and keeping your pets out of bedrooms and main living areas.
