In many settings, outside fresh air is required to reduce the buildup of VOCs in buildings. Depending on several factors, the amount of required outside fresh air can vary and always comes at a cost. Heating or cooling outside air is not energy-efficient.
IMC 2006 and later allows for ASRHAE Standard 62 IAQP as a means to reduce the amount of outside air necessary to maintain high indoor air quality. This is possible through the use of certain indoor air purifiers.
The air purifier must not produce ozone, and it must have validated third party performance testing. In addition, the supplier must provide an indoor air quality calculator to ensure the proper reduction of outside air.
