Can College Dorm Rooms Put Students at Risk for Mold Exposure?

Move-in day, and the room smells a little off. Not bad, exactly, just faintly damp, the way a basement smells. Why dorm buildings are built for moisture problems

Most dorms are older buildings, and a lot of them are constructed with concrete block walls, a material choice that made sense for durability and cost but that also happens to retain moisture and stay cooler than the surrounding air.   • Condensation that regularly forms on windows or on furniture pushed against exterior walls
  • A roommate or hallmate developing symptoms, congestion, headaches, or coughing that seem to ease when they're away from the building for an extended stretch
  • Any water stain or leak that reappears after being painted over

What's within a student's control

Students generally can't fix a building's HVAC system or force a faster maintenance response, though putting a concern in writing to Residence Life, rather than just mentioning it to an RA in passing, creates a record that matters if the problem escalates. What students can control directly is the air in their own room.
