The contractor's booked, the material's ordered, and you're already picturing the fine white dust settling into your couch cushions and the paint smell taking over the whole floor for a week. You still have time to prevent most of that. The work you do in the day or two before the crew shows up matters more than almost anything you'll do once the project's underway.

Contain the space before a single wall comes down

Dust from demolition, sanding, and cutting doesn't stay where the work happens. It rides air currents through doorways, under gaps, and through HVAC returns into every room connected to the one being worked on. Before anything starts, hang plastic sheeting across doorways leading out of the work zone, taped at the top and weighted at the bottom so it actually seals rather than just hangs there. If the work room has a return air vent, cover it temporarily with plastic and tape, and close the supply vents in that room too. You want that space cut off from your home's shared air as much as possible.

If the project involves sanding drywall or cutting tile, ask your contractor whether they're using dust-containment tools like a sander with a vacuum attachment. Most professional crews have this equipment. It's worth asking rather than assuming.

Set up your purifier before the work starts, not after

The instinct is to run a purifier once the dust is already visible. By then, a lot of it has already settled onto surfaces where a purifier can't reach it. Position an air purifier in the work room itself, running on high, before the first day of demolition, and let it run continuously through the project. It's working on the fine particles that stay airborne, which is the fraction most likely to end up in your lungs, even as your contractor cleans up the visible debris on the floor.

If the work is happening in an open area connected to the rest of the house, put a second unit just outside the containment barrier, in the nearest room people are actually using. That gives you a line of defense for whatever slips past the plastic sheeting.

Know what you're dealing with before you pick paint or adhesives

Paint, adhesives, and some flooring materials release VOCs as they cure, and the amount varies a lot by product. If you have any say in material selection, low-VOC or zero-VOC paint reduces the load significantly, though it's worth knowing that "zero-VOC" typically describes the base before tinting, and added color can reintroduce some VOC content. The same goes for adhesives used in flooring installation — water-based options generally off-gas less than solvent-based ones. This is a conversation worth having with your contractor before materials are ordered, not after they're already on site.

During the work: ventilate on purpose, not by accident

If weather allows, crack a window in the work room itself, ideally with a fan pointed outward to actively pull fumes and dust out rather than letting them drift into the rest of the house. Avoid opening windows in adjacent rooms during active work, since that can pull contaminated air toward the people living there instead of away from them. If you can, keep kids, pets, and anyone with asthma or chemical sensitivity out of the house entirely during the messiest days: heavy sanding, spray finishes, or fresh paint application.

After the work: don't call it done too soon

Once the crew packs up, resist moving furniture back in and calling it finished. Keep your purifier running on high for several more days. Fresh paint releases the bulk of its VOCs in the first 24 to 72 hours, but trace off-gassing continues well beyond that, especially in a room with limited airflow. Ventilate the space as much as weather allows for the first week, and vacuum with a HEPA-filter vacuum rather than a standard one, since regular vacuums can recirculate the finest dust right back into the air instead of capturing it.
