Air Purifiers for Asthma: Do They Work

Can an air purifier help with asthma?

If you or a loved one suffers from asthma, you probably already track exposure to pollutants or seasonal factors that make symptoms worse. You are on a mission to turn the wheezing into easy breathing, and we are here to shed light onto some resources that can help.

There may be no magic fix to perfectly resolve asthma, but there are ways you can set up your home or office to help people with different kinds of asthma.

At Air Oasis, we care about your air, understanding that poor indoor air quality isn’t always just about comfort. In the case of people with asthma, it can be essential. From allergies to asthma, we are meticulous about our research and dedicated to manufacturing the best air purifiers money can buy, protecting you whether you are at home, work, or school.

Can Air Purifiers for Asthma Work?

Thanks to dedicated researchers, we know that air purifiers get rid of airborne viruses and bacteria, a prime culprit for sicknesses. But what about chronic conditions? Can air purifiers for asthma work?

Before a cure (or at least comfort), any good scientists will tell you to look for a cause. Not everyone’s asthma is triggered the same way, so it's important to shortlist common asthma triggers that apply to your situation.

Common Asthma Triggers

Here are some candidates for that shortlist:

  • Weather-related conditions (temperature fluctuations, humidity, cold air)
  • Air pollution
  • Movement or exercise
  • Certain medicines
  • Fragrances or strong odors
  • Certain foods
  • Allergens (pet dander, dust mites, even black mold or other types of mold)

How Do You Reduce Asthma Triggers?

According to the American Lung Association, many of these triggers can be reduced through lifestyle changes and decreasing exposure to certain things. For instance, if you know that certain foods trigger asthma, you can change your diet. Same with certain medicines or odors/fragrances.

Other asthma triggers, however, are much harder to avoid and some may not be avoidable at all. Unless Elon Musk has been up to something we don’t know about, weather control isn’t in the cards. Neither is totally avoiding air pollution or all allergens. Notice we said “totally avoiding,” because this is where our expertise comes in:

Air purifiers can help with asthma by diminishing the volume of airborne pollution, particulates, and irritants.

Let’s talk more about that.

Air Purifiers for Asthma

If you or someone in your family suffers from asthma, you are already more aware than most people about air quality. Both outdoor air quality and indoor air quality impact how deeply you can breathe, and whether asthma symptoms flare up. Home can be a safe haven for asthma sufferers, especially if common irritants are removed through air purification.

There are two types of air purifier technology that make air purifiers effective for asthma.

  1. Bi-polar, Cold Plasma Ionization — Air purifiers that use bi-polar ionization use electricity to split water vapor into positively and negatively charged ions. In case you haven’t talked about ions since highschool (like most people), this simply relates to the makeup of the air around you, and what is contained in it. By charging ions, airborne particles can draw together and fall out of the air. This means that miniscule bits of irritants fall away so you don’t inhale them. It can be a huge defense against airborne asthma triggers, and create cleaner air in your whole home, office, or school.
  2. HEPA — This is probably a more familiar one to you: HEPA air filters for asthma use forced air and a special filter to trap even teeny tiny particles in the air. As the air cycles through, all of the irritants and particulates and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) get filtered out, cycling back in fresh and clean air.

At Air Oasis, we’re fans of all of the above.

What is the Best Air Purifier for Someone With Asthma?

For our money, the best air purifier for someone with asthma uses multistage air purification. In other words, it isn’t just a single process, but a myriad of air purification processes that filter out every type of particulate (biggest to smallest) and leave the air as clean as possible.

And they aren’t all created equal. Our air purifiers have been subject to rigorous testing, mostly because we know how important air purifiers are for people with asthma and people with all types of other health conditions. This is about your safety and wellbeing, which is our utmost priority.

“We board and train dogs and as you can imagine the air quality can become compromised with all the dander, hair, dirt on paws, etc. so I purchased this hepa system. A bit pricey, but I’ve got to say, WOW!! What a difference it has made!!!”

“We installed the IAdapt Air 2.0 in our bedroom while we await the ability to replace the windows. It has made a huge difference and I sleep so much better. I also don’t note any new growth after thoroughly cleaning the windows, using concrobium and new varnish.”

“Today we put the purifier to the test…my husband made his brisket and usually the aroma permeates the entire house and stays “checked in” for about 3 days. While cooking I put the fan on 3 out of 4 speeds and guess what…the house did NOT smell of cooking odor!”
